Emmy nominations 2018 announced: Game of Thrones lands 22 nods

The 70th annual Emmy Awards nominations were announced on TV on Thursday morning.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley and New Amsterdam’s Ryan Eggold helped the Academy executives unveil the list of nominations in the top categories. 

Game of Thrones earned a leading 22 Emmy Award nominations, including for best drama series.

HBO’s fantasy saga is a two-time best drama winner that sat out the last year’s awards.

It’s returning to face formidable competition: The Handmaid’s Tale, the dystopian sci-fi series that claimed top drama honors last year, drew 20 bids, with Westworld close by with 21.

Donald Glover’s Atlanta is the top comedy with 16 bids. It will face newcomers including The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Barry, starring Bill Hader.

Roseanne managed to pick up two nominations despite the star’s racist tweet back in May, including Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Laurie Metcalf. 

Saturday Night Live, riding high with its relentless pillorying of the Trump administration, was rewarded with 21 nods.

The previous high for Game of Thrones was 24 nominations in 2015. It got 23 nods in 2016 but wasn’t eligible last year. 

The first category was Best Actor.

The nominees included Antonio Banderas for Genius: Picasso, Darren Criss for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Benedict Cumberbatch for Patrick Melrose, Jeff Daniels  for The Looming Tower, John Legend  for Jesus Christ Superstar and Jesse Plemons  for USS Callister.

As far as Outstanding Comedy Series, that category included Atlanta, Barry, blackish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, GLOW, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Silicon Valley and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series went to Anthony Anderson, Ted Danson, Larry David, Donald Glover, Bill Hader and William H. Macy

Pamela Adlon, Rachel Brosnahan, Allison Janney, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross and Lily Tomlin were named for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Emmy voting gets underway August 13 and concludes August 27. 

The Creative Arts Awards this year are September 8-9, with the Primetime Emmy Awards set for Monday, September 17 at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. 

NBC is broadcasting this year’s primetime show, co-hosted by SNL’s Colin Jost and Michael Che and executive produced by Lorne Michaels.
