Her lawyer David Sexton told the court his client had spent the last 26 years with a sense of ‘shame, remorse and self-loathing’.
The boy left the school shortly after the incident and later confided to his mother, who brought it to the school’s attention.
McDougall admitted inappropriate behaviour and was ordered on long service leave but never returned to teaching.
She went on to establish a successful counselling business and continues to work in that field, The Herald Sun reported.
McDougall was charged in 2016 with more than a dozen offences against the boy.
She has pleaded guilty to one count of an indecent act with a child under 16.
Mr Sexton has called for a suspended sentence, which prosecutors haven’t opposed, The Herald Sun reported.
