World Cup star Kyle Walker to England: ‘Let’s keep this unity alive’

Kyle Walker has called on the people of England to stay united after the country’s World Cup dreams were dashed.

At a time when politics splits the nation like never before, English men and women from all backgrounds and beliefs were joined together by a wave of patriotic optimism; inspired by the Three Lions defying the odds to reach the semi-finals.

Club rivalries, both in stands and on the field, were also forgotten as England manager Gareth Southgate created a tight squad comprised of players from all across the Premier League.

Walker took to Twitter the morning after Wednesday’s 2-1 extra-time defeat at the hands of Croatia in Moscow.

The Manchester City right back, who has played as part of a three-man defensive unit in Russia, admitted he was deeply disappointed that England’s World Cup dream had died.

But Walker hailed the English public for their role in this summer’s adventure and urged them to ‘keep this unity alive’.

Writing above a picture of England players applauding their supporters in Moscow, Walker tweeted: ‘I’m still heartbroken and never felt so gutted. But there’s something I want to say.

‘This past month, I’ve seen videos going around, photos been sent to me. That felt so good for us here in Russia, and united us more and more, just like it did in our country.’

In a second tweet, Walker added: ‘We might live in a time where sometimes it’s easier to be negative than positive, or to divide than to unite, but England: let’s keep this unity alive. I love you.’

Fellow defender Harry Maguire also had a message for England fans. He tweeted: ‘Devastated. Absolutely gutted. Thanks to the fans for your incredible support.’

Captain Harry Kane echoed that sentiment as he added: ‘It hurts a lot. It will hurt for a while. We can be proud and we’ll be back. Thanks for all your support.’

Jesse Lingard wrote: ‘Was an honour to represent my country at the World Cup. The squad we have is a great bunch of lads who are willing to learn and give everything and we can hold our heads high.

‘Thank you to everyone who supported our journey. We don’t stop here!’

Kieran Trippier, who scored his first international goal on Wednesday, said: ‘Last night hurt and will for a while but we must take positives from the last few weeks and look forward to the future.

‘What a great set of teammates and staff, it’s been a journey we can be proud of. Thank you to all the fans out here and back home for your support’.

England forward Marcus Rashford paid tribute to manager Gareth Southgate.

Rashford tweeted a photo of himself hugging Southgate with the words: ‘You’ve brought belief and the love of football back. Thank you boss from the whole nation’.
