Virtual reality headset could cure vertigo as technology cuts fear of heights in half

A severe fear of heights could be cured by virtual reality (VR) developed by UK scientists.

Vertigo is a significant problem for one in five at some point in their lives.

A paper published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal found new treatment reduced fear by an average of 68 per cent.

Study leader Professor Daniel Freeman, whose technology is produced by Oxford University spinout, Oxford VR, said: ‘The outcomes exceeded expectations.’

The study involved 100 people tested in heights up to ten storeys through a VR headset, using a standard psychological measurement of fear.

One participant said: ‘What I’m noticing is that in day-to-day life I’m much less averse to edges, and steps, and heights.’

‘I feel I’m making enormous progress.’
