Marcus Rashford misses England training session with knee problem

Marcus Rashford was again absent from England’s training session on Thursday as their World Cup opener against Tunisia draws closer.

The Manchester United striker picked up a knee injury in England’s last training session prior to departing for Russia on Tuesday.

Although manager Gareth Southgate described it as a ‘slight knock’, Rashford’s hopes of featuring in Monday evening’s Group G opener in Volgograd appear to be diminishing.

The 20-year-old emerged as a challenger to Raheem Sterling in the side after scoring an impressive goal and taking the man of the match accolade in last Thursday’s 2-0 friendly win over Costa Rica.

Rashford attempted to allay concerns about his fitness by posting a message on his Twitter account on Wednesday evening.

‘Thanks for the messages I’ve been getting. Picked up a slight niggle but nothing to worry about #ThreeLions.’

Rashford underwent separate fitness work at the team hotel while the squad held an open training session at the Spartak Zelenogorsk stadium, near their base in the town of Repino, close to Saint Petersburg.

They began the session with a minute’s silence for the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster one year ago.
