Michael Arnold, 38, has been jailed for 25 years for raping a 12-year-old family member in March last year
A Georgia man who raped a 12-year-old girl before she suffered a stillbirth has been jailed for 25 years.
Michael Arnold, 38, from the city of McDonough, admitted raping the female family member in March last year.
His crime was only discovered after the girl, who did not know she was pregnant, gave birth to a stillborn child.
The girl’s mother called police and officers used DNA from the fetus to identify Arnold as the father.
Arnold was sentenced to a whole-life term in court on Wednesday, but under the terms of a plea deal will only spent 25 years of that time behind bars.
He will then have to spend the rest of his life on probation, will have to sign up to the sex offender register, and will be banned from contact with the victim.
Arnold will have to serve every day of his prison sentence and will not be eligible for parole, the judge said.
District Attorney Darius Pattillo told the Atlanta Journal Constitution: ‘The family is satisfied with the outcome because it sends Mr. Arnold to jail for a significant amount of time and requires him to be supervised by law enforcement for the remainder or his life, while protecting the victim from testifying in court.
‘I commend McDonough Police and our team for conducting a thorough investigation and working diligently with public safety officials in another state to get justice in this case.’
Arnold, from the city of McDonough, will serve his full 25 year sentence without parole before spending the rest of his life on probation as part of a deal to save the victim from testifying
