Cuttlefish drags discarded condom by its mouth in an Italian lagoon

These photographs show a cuttlefish dragging a discarded condom through the sea, laying bare the shocking effects of mankind’s pollution of the world’s oceans.

The cuttlefish was spotted pulling along the condom, made of latex or polyurethane, after likely mistaking it for food in a lagoon in Miseno near the Italian port city of Naples.

Pasquale Vassallo, a photographer from Napoli, who captured the disturbing pictures, said his first reaction was of ‘amazement and despair.’

‘The cuttlefish touched and carried the condom using its mouth. I had the feeling she was curious to touch a different material,’ the 48-year-old said.

‘It makes me angry when I see this. We should all try to be more attentive to the environment.’

He added that he tried to remove the condom from the cuttlefish, but didn’t succeed.

‘It is not easy to capture a cuttlefish with your hands,’ he said. ‘I have never seen such behaviour, I would say it is a unique sighting.’

Pollution in the ocean is becoming a global crisis, with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Economic Forum predicting the amount of plastic in the sea will outweigh the number of fish by 2050.
